A Brief History of Eaglesham
5 MayA few key dates from our past...
12th Century - Likely building date of a motte, or wooden castle, on what is now the Orry.
14th Century - Polnoon Castle is built by the Montgomeries with money raised from ransoming Sir Henry Percy after the Battle of Otterburn.
1733 - Polnoon Lodge is built as a hunting lodge by the Montgomeries after Polnoon Castle is abandoned.
1769 - The existing shape of the centre of Eaglesham is laid out on the orders of Alexander Montgomerie, Earl of Eglinton.
1876 - The last of the local cotton mills burns down.
1941 - Rudolf Hess parachutes onto Eaglesham Moor and is captured.
1960 - Eaglesham becomes Scotland's first conservation village.
2010 - s1eaglesham.com is launched to give locals a place to discuss local issues, place small ads, air their opinions, advertise events and show off pictures and video.
